Independent reference design

Useful AI.
Accountable systems.

Connect AI capabilities with enterprise systems while retaining control of access, operational behaviour and service quality.

A reference design informed by professional experience, for discussion and evaluation. No production performance, safety or commercial outcomes are claimed.

Business purpose

AI becomes useful when it can work with the organisation's actual information and processes. That requires dependable integration, appropriate permissions, clear accountability and an operating model that remains supportable after a demonstration becomes a service.

The architectural challenge is to connect heterogeneous applications and infrastructure without allowing each new tool to introduce another isolated interface, permission model or operational dependency.

Integration and access

The concept uses governed interfaces to separate business capabilities from vendor-specific implementations. APIs and Model Context Protocol can provide access to approved tools and information, with identity, role-based access and scoped permissions applied to each operation.

Tool access should follow the user's authority and the purpose of the request. Read operations and consequential actions need distinct controls, with validation and human approval where the business process requires them. Audit records should show what was requested, which capability was invoked and what happened.

Private inference and service quality

Private inference offers architectural options where organisations need greater control over hosting, information boundaries and workload allocation. GPU capacity, model selection and concurrency must be considered alongside application and network constraints.

Traffic engineering and workload scheduling can help prioritise services with different latency and availability needs. QoS/DSCP policy, admission control, queue management and capacity planning must be assessed across the complete service path. A packet marking alone does not establish an end-to-end delivery guarantee.

Operational visibility

Observability should connect application behaviour with platform and network evidence. Kubernetes telemetry, Linux networking and eBPF-based visibility can help establish where resource contention, policy enforcement or integration failures affect a service.

Service objectives should be measurable. The design should specify latency, availability, recovery and access-control criteria, then evaluate them using realistic workloads and failure scenarios. AI execution can be constrained and validated, but output variability must be accounted for.

Governance and delivery

Architecture governance links these controls to business decisions: who owns the capability, which risks are acceptable, how changes are reviewed and how operators recover the service. Supplier and support arrangements need to cover the real dependencies rather than only individual components.

The concept is intended to support discussion, prototyping and evaluation. Production performance, safety, availability and commercial outcomes are not claimed.
